Just about a year ago …

We increasingly heard from you, members of our community, that political division was leading to family, church, and community dysfunction.  

As followers of Jesus’ teachings, we were confident the power of prayer and practical steps could bridge the gap between differing political views.

 

And so we launched a prayer project entitled “Healing The Political Divide.”

 

We’re eager to share the results.

 

We have invited two extraordinary political journalists and spiritual thinkers to help us share.

 

Mark Sappenfield, Editor of The Christian Science Monitor, brings an extraordinary perspective. He has seen firsthand how letting go of human passion and allowing Love to lead the way have led to powerful, sometimes surprising, results.

“The most important question for Christian Scientists today is how to pray about political polarization.”

On October 29, he will:

  • Share stories of practical steps that have brought about unity over the past year
  • Discuss how unselfed love heals division
  • Share new perspectives on how to work toward a more perfect union
  • Acknowledge the struggle it takes to heal disunity (hint: we can take a lesson from Jacob)
  • Answer the question: can we rely on faith?

 

Gail Russell Chaddock will use her well-honed interview skills from nearly thirty years of reporting for The Christian Science Monitor to ask Mark the “hard questions.”

About Our Speakers

Mark Sappenfield

  • Mark Sappenfield began his career at The Christian Science Monitor in 1996 and has been Editor since 2017 
  • Previously, he was The Monitor's national news editor for three years and deputy national news editor for five.
  • Sappenfield has reported from South Asia, including Afghanistan and Pakistan, as well as India, the Pentagon, the California Bay Area, and Boston.
  • He has covered seven Olympic Winter and Summer Games and reported on NASA’s Opportunity, Spirit, and Galileo missions from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. 
  • He received his degree in journalism from Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia.
  • Mark has lived and worked for The Monitor in Berlin for two years.

Gail Russell Chaddock

  • Gail Russell Chaddock was The Christian Science Monitor’s Washington-based political editor from 2013-2016, after covering Congress (2001-2012) and Education (1997-2000). 
  • Previously, she reported out of Paris (1994-97) and was the Monitor’s Boston-based National News Editor (1992-94), responsible for the paper’s daily coverage of US news.   
  • She joined the Monitor in 1987 as an overseas news editor, after teaching political science at Swarthmore College, Wesleyan University, and Bennington College (1978-86) 
  • She has degrees in political science from Wellesley College and Princeton University.  
  • She currently guest-hosts the Monitor’s Why We Wrote This podcast, a conversation with Monitor writers on how they approach the news. She learned about podcasts hosting “No Farms No Future” for American Farmland Trust and later founded Brookline603, a local news podcast.  
  • She lives with her husband, Rob, on a family farm in Brookline, NH.
